Local government

Local government refers to the level of government that operates at the community or municipal level,usually within a specific geographic area.Local governments are responsible for providing a wide range of services and infrastructure to their constituents,including public safety,education,healthcare,transportation,housing and waste management.

In India, local government is known as the Panchayati Raj system, which is a three-tier system of local government that includes the village,block, and district levels.The Panchayati Raj system was established in 1992 to provide a decentralized form of governance and improve local service delivery.

let's have a look into the Panchayati Raj system and their roles:

1. Gram Panchayat: The Gram Panchayat is the village-level institution that represents the interests of the local community. It is responsible for providing basic services such as water supply,sanitation, and healthcare, as well as maintains local infrastructure such as roads and buildings.The Gram Panchayat is led by a sarpanch or village head, who is elected by the member of gram sabha.

2. Block Panchayat: The Block Panchayat is the second tier of the Panchayat Raj system and consists of a group of Gram Panchayats. It is responsible for coordinating the development activities of the Gram Panchayats with its jurisdiction and implementing government schemes at the block level.The block Panchayat is led by a pradhan, Who is elected by the members of the Block Sabha.

3. Zilla Panchayat: The Zilla Panchayat is the highest level of the Panchayat Raj System and is responsible for overseeing the development activities of the Block Panchayats within its jurisdiction.It is also responsible for implementing government schemes and programs at the district level, as well as providing necessary infrastructure and services to the people. The Zilla Panchayat is led by a chairperson or president. who is elected by the members of Zilla Parishad.
